So when I started my new job, I was obviously very excited to be a part of such an amazing organization. I work for MOSHK Inc. which is part of the
MSHK Group (I know, a lot of acronyms!), the worlds largest independent music label, and that's pretty damn cool, no? MSHK is made up of
Ministry of Sound,
Hed Kandi and
Global Underground. Each brand represents the finest in the dance/house music scene.
Now look, lets be honest, I do nottttt have the greatest knowledge of the house music scene. I'm a showtunes and pop kinda guy, really. I mean, I love music as a whole, but there are just certain genres that I more versed it...betterly versed in? have more knowledge of? whatever the term is, lets just say i know more about
Sondheim then of
Shapeshifters. And look, that's fine, I told them that while I was auditioning. But even in the short period of time that I've been with the organization (all of a week and a half now), I really feel like I've learned a lot about the industry and the culture and most importantly, the brand. Since I focus more on Hed Kandi in my day-to-day activities, I felt like sharing with everyone what I am working on.
I traveled to Houston and Austin this past weekend to do Hed Kandi events, and I'll be heading to Boston on Friday to do another one. It's quite hard to describe Hed Kandi really (although there is a good/long description
here), but the range of music goes from
fun uppity hands-in-the-air dance floor songs to the kind of music that you just want to be listening to while you are
lying by the pool sipping a pina colalaaaa. The music is described as "happy, fun, sexy disco-y enjoyment", and it totally is. Hed Kandi has put out over 80 albums worldwide, and what I have been telling people is that this music is asexual. Gay guys, straight guys, girls, manly girls, everyone really loves the music. The crowd is so diverse, and everyone is just listening to have a good time.
We do so much in our little office of three, it blows my mind. Album production, music licensing (to CSI Miami or whoever wants our music), event coordination (that's my job!), brand marketing and more. The brands that I work for are HUGE worldwide, and we are just starting to make an impact in North America. It's really exciting to be a part of this organization to see how it grows and expands.
I really never thought that I would work for a music label, but then again, I don't think you can ever guess where your life is going to take you. i've done a lot of things in my day, i've held my fair share of jobs, and i had many crazy experiences.
life is an adventure, i'm putting together the soundtrack.
