you know, i had a whole idea for a post that I was going to write today, because I've had so much going on lately (Eric's Dirty Thirty Birthday, work, some travel, etc...), but I really just wanted to write on today's going's on. Obviously it's been a big day for the news, with the world losing two fantastic stars.
I won't lie, I was never a huge Farrah Fawcett fan, she was a luminary in her own way, but not during my time. I think for many people in my generation, we knew her as one of Charlie's Angels, but mainly through reruns and knowledge of her famed poster, as well as her whackadoo appearance on Letterman so many years ago. She was so famous for her hair, her body, her attitude, but in recent months it was her unyielding spirit in the face of death that really captured the nation. her strength and fight to survive with humor and bravery encouraged so many people. She will truly be missed.
So the more prominent news (although the loss of anyone is sad as it is) is that of Michael Jackson. There really is just no one that I can think of in my short 29.5 year lifetime who has made such an impression on popular culture. Yes, I love Madonna, I always have and I always will, and yes, I do love her more than MJ, but he was just on this higher plateau. He was the "King of Pop".
You know what's interesting though? Through all of his trial and tribulations (and I do mean trials!), we never took that title from him. I can't even remember the last single that he put out or the last big song of his, but he always was, and always remained the "King of Pop". It was undisputed. There was no "well, i don't know if he should have this fictional title anymore, he doesn't deserve it." His music was just timeless, his videos were legendary.
Thriller. PYT. Billie Jean. The Way You Make Me Feel. Beat It.
I was truly saddened to hear that he died. It didn't seem real. It's Michael Jackson. He will be missed.
"I can't stop crying over the sad news. I have always admired Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greats, but his music will live on forever! My heart goes out to his three children and other members of his family. God bless." - Madonna

Once again, I have been slacking when it comes up posting on this here blog of mine. I have been workin my sweet ass of as of late, so at the end of the day I just want to crash on my couch with a bottle of beer (or vodka!) and just chillax. I know all of my loyal readers (again, thank you both!) have been anxiously awaiting my return to form, but I’m lagging as of late.
I feel like with this new job (which I am totally digging by the way), I have so much going on, and such increased responsibility, that I am focusing a lot on it. We’re a brand that so well known worldwide (worlds largest independent record label, etc...), but we are still trying to break into the market here in the US. We have had good exposure over the years (many people are familiar with the Ministry of Sound Annual album produced every year, but now is when we are going to really step up the game, and my job is integral to that. I look forward to seeing how these events shape up, and how my experience will parlay into this exciting brand expansion. I have a whole list of markets to conquer, SF, San Diego, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Seattle, Puerto Rico, Vancouver and more...like I said, it’s very exciting, but it’s a lot of responsibility. I love it!!
On top of all of that, I am planning my best friend Eric’s 30th Birthday party, which is sure to be an amazzzzzzing event. I can’t go much into details right now only because the less Eric knows, the better, but what I can all (two) of you, is that we are holding it in the Thompson Penthouse Loft at the Thompson LES Hotel. The room is...well, breaktaking, sick, sexy, chic, mind-blowing...those adjectives all come to mind quite rapidly...I have arranged several "surprises" throughout the night, and I know that Eric is going to be just blown away by it all. The theme is “Eric’s Dirty Thirty”, and the invite I created is below...needless to say, it’s going to be a night to remember!

So when I started my new job, I was obviously very excited to be a part of such an amazing organization. I work for MOSHK Inc. which is part of the MSHK Group (I know, a lot of acronyms!), the worlds largest independent music label, and that's pretty damn cool, no? MSHK is made up of Ministry of Sound, Hed Kandi and Global Underground. Each brand represents the finest in the dance/house music scene.
Now look, lets be honest, I do nottttt have the greatest knowledge of the house music scene. I'm a showtunes and pop kinda guy, really. I mean, I love music as a whole, but there are just certain genres that I more versed it...betterly versed in? have more knowledge of? whatever the term is, lets just say i know more about Sondheim then of Shapeshifters. And look, that's fine, I told them that while I was auditioning. But even in the short period of time that I've been with the organization (all of a week and a half now), I really feel like I've learned a lot about the industry and the culture and most importantly, the brand. Since I focus more on Hed Kandi in my day-to-day activities, I felt like sharing with everyone what I am working on.
I traveled to Houston and Austin this past weekend to do Hed Kandi events, and I'll be heading to Boston on Friday to do another one. It's quite hard to describe Hed Kandi really (although there is a good/long description here), but the range of music goes from fun uppity hands-in-the-air dance floor songs to the kind of music that you just want to be listening to while you are lying by the pool sipping a pina colalaaaa. The music is described as "happy, fun, sexy disco-y enjoyment", and it totally is. Hed Kandi has put out over 80 albums worldwide, and what I have been telling people is that this music is asexual. Gay guys, straight guys, girls, manly girls, everyone really loves the music. The crowd is so diverse, and everyone is just listening to have a good time.
We do so much in our little office of three, it blows my mind. Album production, music licensing (to CSI Miami or whoever wants our music), event coordination (that's my job!), brand marketing and more. The brands that I work for are HUGE worldwide, and we are just starting to make an impact in North America. It's really exciting to be a part of this organization to see how it grows and expands.
I really never thought that I would work for a music label, but then again, I don't think you can ever guess where your life is going to take you. i've done a lot of things in my day, i've held my fair share of jobs, and i had many crazy experiences.
life is an adventure, i'm putting together the soundtrack.
